An usually cruel glint could be seen in Rodric's eyes as he stared out at the line of saxons.  The knight left his spears strapped to his mount, deciding instead to use his sword.  He could spill more saxon blood this way.

As the group bared down on the saxons Rodric chose his targets and raised his sword in the air.  When they crashed into the line, his sword struck twice.

[OOC: Splitting attacks into 2, 10/9, modified skills 20/19.
Attack one roll result 9 vs skill 20, success.  Damage 18.
Attack two roll result 19 vs skill 19, critical success.  Damage 19*2, 38
Horsemanship roll result 15 vs skill 14, failure.  Missed it by that much...]

[OOC: To clarify for others (and because I missed it initially), Rodric does not get +5 for Lance Charge when using his sword, but he successfully employed hiss passion Hate: Saxons to gain a +5 personal bonus to skill level. His total bonus to skill is +10.]

Couching a spear and putting boot to the flank of his horse, Artaigne thundered across the ground in formation with the others, ready to impale some Saxon dogs.  He thrilled in the joy of being a part of the line, something bigger than just one person.  This is what it meant to be truly alive.

ooc: Spear attack effective skill 21: 17 vs 20, success!

Arne's hand started to reach for his spear, but instead he silently drew his sword.  His skill with a spear being what it was, he'd be damned lucky if he didn't bury it in the back of one of his comrades.  He spurred his horse in a full gallop, his sword raised.

Effective "to hit" level:  15+5 = 20
"To hit" roll:  15 (success)
Damage (5d6):  13 (bleah)

As everyone thunders forward, Cedwyn notes that Rodric, Valka and Arne drop back as the rest of you carry forward.

Cedwyn, leading the charge, slams his spear into the Saxon in his sights, running the Saxon completely through the heart. The Saxon folds up like a sack of flour and falls to the beach. Cedwyn manages to save his spear, but cannot force his way through the Saxon line, and is bogged down in melee.

Artaigne, also charging, drive his spear deep into the shoulder of the Saxon, breaking the blade and two feet of the shaft off and leaving it there. The Saxon's arm goes limp, and he falls to the sand with a debilitating injury.

Arne declines to use his spear, and rides up to the Saxons with his sword. He drives the blade into the Saxon's chest. He clutches at the wound and falls to the sand, unable to catch his breath. Before Arne can recover, the Saxon on his left hand drives his spear into Arne's flank, scoring a solid hit that is partially absorbed by Arne's Northman armour.

Rodric, his face a mask of hatred, takes his horse into the middle of the Saxon line and swings his sword like a man looking for death. His first strike meets the Saxon spear as it steabs toward his chest. Sword and spear meet. Neither attack lands, but the end of the Saxon spear sails away, neatly cut by Rodric's blade. Without missing a beat, Rodric makes a back-handed swing that catches the opponent on his other side in the neck. He staggers back from the wound as his left arm goes limp, alive but crippled.

Valka, her pace more cautious than a full charge, also wades into the Saxon line with her spear. She catches her fist opponent in this hip, and he drops his spear and drops to his knees, clutching at the wound. Valka spins her horse and slashes with her spear at her second opponent, raking the blade over the Saxon's helmet. He screams as he drops his spear so his hands can fly to his eyes. Apparently unable to see, he staggers about the battlefield trying to get clear.

[Actions?]

No one managed to break through the Saxon line, so you guys are bogged down in melee.

Artaigne broke his spear.

Pleased with the result of her attacks this time, Valka turned her horse quickly to view the squirmish. Even though her heart wanted to bludgeon her Saxons at this moment she saw one of Arne's opponents get in a solid hit without taking one himself, and that enraged her. With a harrowing scream she thundered towards that Saxon.

Valka defending what's hers (+5)
1d20 <= 20 v 14 ... success

[Arne, you see Valka turn to take on your wounded Saxon. You can switch to the un-wounded one if you want.]

Cedwyn whirled Peredur to attack the other Saxon in his zone of control. He whirled the spear and came down hard against him.

[spear: 11 roll versus 20. Success. Dmg: 29 (v1 if I use Peredur). V2: personal: 16  (if I don't use Peredur)]

Rodric almost snarled as the Saxon blocked his attack, but the Saxon's spear didn't survive his strike. His second target wasn't so lucky but was also still on his feet.
The knight focused his attention mostly on the first Saxon, swinging his sword hard at the man, but still keeping some strength and skill in reserve to finish off the other.

Attack 1 roll result 19+4, 23, critical success. Damage 11*2, 22.

Dropping his spear in favor of his blade, the Irish warrior turned on the whole Saxon near to him, as all of the other opponents seemed to be occupied.  Bringing the blade around in a high arc, he looked to fell his foe quickly.

ooc: sword attack 17 vs 20 success

damage 21

ooc2: fixed that to say spear, sorry for any confusion.

Arne cursed as he took a spear in his side, although his stout armor absorbed some of the thrust.  Unable to win free of the crowd, he wheeled his horse around just as he heard Valka let out a fury-filled scream.  He watched as Valka drove her spear home against the Saxon that had wounded him, and laughed maniacally as he whipped his sword down against the one he'd already injured.

Roll needed to hit:  15+10 = 25
"To hit" roll:  3 (success)
Sword damage (5d6) = 22 (OUCH!)

OOC:  Valka said she was going after the Saxon that jabbed me (he'd be the uninjured one), so Arne will finish his wounded one off first.  Arne wouldn't have a problem with Valka turning the guy into a Saxon kebab - as far as he's concerned, a lifeless Saxon is a good Saxon.   ;)
