Title: Battle at Mearcred creek
Post by: GM Craig on July 31, 2014, 01:16:55 PM
A little sooner than expected, you see Air Amig's banner waving, and your start the long march to the south-east. Both Sir Cedwyn and Sir Rodric are a little surprised to see a new knight joining you - Gwyn. Last evening at the banquet, this knight was serving as a squire, and you both remember him from your time in Roderic's service.

You know Gwyn ap Cai from his time as a squire. His father, a commoner in service to the old count, was elevated to Esquire for his service to Count Roderick on the Night of Long Knives. The story goes that Cai learned of the coming betrayal. He did not have enough time to warn the others, but managed to intercept the young (and current) count and saved his life as a result. As an Esquire, Cai became known for his skills at intrigue, and was often abroad visiting other lands on behalf of Count Roderick.

Gryn wears the Count's livery, indicating he is a house knight to Roderick.

You also note that Sir Rodric picked up a squire in the night. Cedwyn also has a new squire in tow, though Cedwyn's is much better equipped.

[Pausing here for reactions.]

Cedwyn saw...Sir...Gwyn approaching. Interesting, he thought.

"And hail to to you Sir Gwyn. The morning brings us all together."

"Hail, Sir Cedwyn, hail, Sir Rodric." Gwyn couldn't help a smile. He enjoyed watching others' reactions to changing events. It was unusual for him to be the changed event! "I was summoned to the Count's chambers late in the night, and now," he lifted his free arm to indicate himself, "as you see. I am elevated, somewhat." He laughed abruptly, at himself. "What do you know of what we ride towards today? I will defer to your experience in these matters, brother knights. In fact, I will depend upon your skills, to be sure!"

"I have no doubt that by the end of this, we will have all come to rely on each other." he replied to the newly minted knight.

"And my congratulations to you Sir Gwyn.  I would hazard a guess that the events of last night will be a source of rumors for many days to come."

Cedwyn laughed.

"Indeed brothers. Rumors will abound, no doubt. I fear this is that start of a something new. But...congratulations, my friend. It is always good to see a comrade brought up in the world."

"And Sir Rodric is right...we all will be needed in this battle, despite that a knight is worth more than 10 Saxons."

[OOC: is Gwyn known for any battle skills]

The newly minted knight, Sir Gwyn, sat his horse like any other, but when he was on foot, although short and stocky though he was, there was no match for his skills with the spear. He was true to his Celt heritage in this respect, and often considered an odd fit for a knight. The knighting by night, as it were, would definitely be a source of rumour and speculation for days. Until the next surprise, of course.

Gwyn nodded to each man in turn, acknowledging the congratulations, and said "In that case, lead on, and let's see where we end today. I look ahead to brilliant exploits!" And he laughed, relishing the thought of battles to come.

[OOC: Moving on.]

The new squires check out. They are young, inexperienced, but keen and eager to earn their place. Rodric's purse is a little lighter, but his squire has passable gear. The march with Sir Amig was uneventful, and as you approach Sussex, scouts report the presence of ?lle's army coming to meet you. After some manoeuvring, Uther finally draws up the army late one evening. Across a small valley, you see the banners of ?lle's forces. Battle will be joined in the morning.

Last minute equipment checks are made, and Sir Amig makes a point to visit each of you during the evening.

At dawn, the army assembles. A thick mist fills the valley as the army forms ranks. You cannot see ?lle's army, but you can hear them on the far side of the vale. You recall from last night that the vale is open ground, with thick woods along either side. A wide creek runs through the middle of the valley, which will make for difficult terrain to fight on. Your best hope is to win through the front ranks and to the more stable ground on the far side.

Amig returns from a conference. "Stead all. We will wait until this accursed fog burns off. Listen for the horns sounding the charge."

Minutes pass, then an hour. Finally, the fog starts to thin. You still cannot see the far side when a horn sounds "ready."

Amig gives everyone a look over before he lowers his visor and takes his spear from his waiting squire. "Ready!" he bellows.

Too soon, while you still cannot see the far side of the valley, the horns sound the advance.

"Walk!" calls out Sir Amig, and your line starts forward. Your advance is a little erratic at first, but with Sir Amig's ungentle encouragement, the fine solidifies.

You are about halfway to the middle, and still cannot see the enemy when Sir Amig calls out, "Canter!"

Everyone picks up speed. You can see the creek now, and hear the sound of screaming Saxons somewhere ahead in the mist.

Finally, you can make out indistinct shapes in the fog when Sir Amig calls out, "Charge!"

Lances lower, and you lean into your stirrups. Battle is joined!

[Actions?]

As you close, you see big Saxon warriors armed with two-handed weapons, and each carrying several stout javelins on their backs. From their gear, these are not common foot soldiers, so their could be ransoms available for any your capture!

Cedwyn felt his blood go up. His heart racing for the first battle he'd be in, he gave a ululating warcry followed with, "For God and King Uther!"

The newly minted knight spurred Peredur onto the hated Saxons.

While you are closing with the foot soliders, a flight of javelins lands among your unit. Some of your knights take minor wounds, but none of the three of you are hurt., and you slam into the foot soldiers.

Rodric scores a decisive hit against the foot soldier he faces, running him completely through before the Saxon can bring his spear to bear. The saxon falls back, but Rodric manages to wrench the spear from the Saxon before it snaps. (+15 glory, possible ransom)

Cedwyn likewise manages to hit his opponent before the Saxon can swing his great sword. Cedwyn runs the Saxon through, and he goes town. Unfortunately, Cedwyn's spear snaps and he leaves the pointy end in the Saxon. (+15 Glory, possible ransom)

Gwyn is not so lucky, and the sword of the Saxon clashes against Gwyn's shield, absorbing much of the blow. (+7 Glory) [Gwyn 17/25]

Elsewhere in your line, the knights fare similarly well, with Saxons goes down. Sir Amig, skilled as he is, takes down both of his opponents.

Then your followers wade into the battle. Cedwyn's retinue has some success and they are all very much in the fight.

The opening minutes of the battle fares well for Sir Amig's troop, and you have won the initial combats. Your squires are all well and close by, and Cedwyn gets a new spear from his Squire to continue the fight.

[End of Round 1. That represents an hour worth of battle.]

As the battle wages on, Sir Amig's force maintains discipline. There have been some minor losses, but on the whole your unit is holding together well. Gwyn has been injured, but is still very much in the fray.

Elsewhere in the battle, there seems to be confusion in the ranks. It appears that your centre has run into some trouble, and the right flank has been driven back by a strong attack.

[OOC: Some oops on the rolls I think. When I say you're +5 to effective skill, then your target is your skill +5. For Rodric, for example, his Spear Expertise is 11. Fighting mounted against a foot soldier, he's effectively got a 16 Spear Expertise. To make a successful attack, he needs to roll 16 or less, but still higher than his opponent. If he rolls 16, it's a crit. I'm not sure where the 1d20+6 came from. Bonuses to the die roll apply if you have an effective skill higher than 20, as that increases your chance of a critical.]

Rodric124Veteran Warrior   Win: (16-8) 8 Damage
Cedwyn1412Veteran WarriorWin: (21-8) 13 Damage
Gwyn178Veteran WarriorWin: (23-8) 15 Damage

Rodric attacks with his spear, and scores a hit, but the tough warrior does not go down. Gwyn has a similar experience, despite shattering his spear. Even Cedwyn's huge horse cannot put enough force behind the spear to bring down his opponent, despite enough force to shatter his spear. The rest of your unit wears down these warriors, but cannot bring any down. Still, you wound them, and drive them back uniformly. Despite no losses, it still counts as a victory. As the battle continues to swirl around you, you eventually loose contact with these veteran warriors.

As you loose contact with the veteran warriors, Cedwyn and Gwyn are re-armed by their squires.

[OOC: Everyone gets 15 Glory]

I'll have the next round up shortly.

The tide of battle carries you away from the wounded veteran warriors. As you continue to fight on, you hear the clear sound of trumpets coming from the enemy side of the battlefield. The mist has mostly burned off now, and you see a fresh contingent of perhaps five hundred Saxon warriors rushing down the slopes on the far side of the valley to join the fray. You were already outnumbered, and this certainly tips the scales further into the Saxon favour.

Elsewhere in the battle, there seems to be confusion in the ranks. It appears that your centre has run into some trouble, and the right flank has been driven back by a strong attack.

[OOC: Remember to split your skill between opponents if you choose, but add any modifiers for things like mounted-vs-foot after the split. Also recall that you are -5 to horsemanship checks due to bad terrain. If you have an 11 skill, you're rolling against a 6.]

PlayerRoll         Roll   TargetPlayer Result

Gwyn15 (fail)17 (fail)Bowman -

Rodric does not fare well in this engagement. He is caught wide open by an arrow. Fortunately, his armour absorbs the hit. But it does unbalance him enough that the heavy mace smashes into his chest. The blow is enough to knock him from the saddle. He rolls off the horse and manages to land on his knees, and struggles back to a standing position. Without his horse, he is dangerously exposed.

[OOC: Rodric can either attempt to take his squire's horse, hop on the squire's horse with him, as part of the Squire phase. If you take his horse, he will run from the battlefield (as is propper and expected).]

The sudden onslaught does not help Cedwyn either, and he cannot mount an effective offence. He does manage to bring his spear against the maceman, but it shatters without doing any damage. Fortunately for Cedwyn, both the bowman and the maceman are unable to connect.

Gwyn likewise cannot land a hit on the bowman, but does manage to his the maceman. The blow is not debilitating, and Gwyn's spear breaks in the attack, but at least he landed a hit.

The rest of the unit performs poorly as well, and poor Sir Amig is beset by four attackers, taking some hits in the process. Everyone but Rodric keeps astride their horse, however, and the battle wages on despite the defeat of your unit.

The loss by your unit seems to match what is happening elsewhere on the field.

[Waiting for Ken's choice for his squire's action before I start the next round.]

The battle surges, and your unit is able to hold it's ground, but barely. The fighting has grown quite intense, and your losses elsewhere are starting to become a concern. The fight is a stalemate, but if things keep going as they have been, Uther will be forced to withdraw. Nearby, you hear someone yelling in Saxon, urging the troops forward. Uther's forces are holding their line, but barely, and the centre and right flank show signs of fraying.

A group of spearmen in light leather armour burst through the chaos to attack you.

Sir Amig bellows, "Hold the line! Everyone hold!"

The beaten spearmen withdraw from you, turning and running towards their own lines. Sir Amig belows, "Hold your positions!" Then, you see a gap open before you. The fleeing spearmen start to run afoul of their own lines and get bogged down. Then, unexpectedly, Sir Amig bellows, "Charge! Charge them!"

The other knights spur their steeds on, and you advance over the field littered with bodies towards the fleeing spearmen.

Elsewhere, the battle grinds to a standstill, which given your recent reversals, is actually good news. Tattered lines start to firm up, and Uther's forces hold their ground. Your lines still look like a rolling wave, but at least they have stopped being pushed back. For your part, Sir Amig's bold charge has driven a wedge deep into the Saxon lines. Your unit is in danger of being cut off and surrounded, but enemy resistance has definitely been reduced.

Sir Amig waves his spear and orders you to press the attack. The hapless spearman you have been engaged with for over an hour now continue to be your target. This time however, the spearmen are being reinforced by an oddity - saxon warriors carrying shields and words. Sir Amig points his spear at Sir Rodric. "Take only one, Sir Rodric!" It chafes a little to be told to hold back, but Sir Rodric must admit his strength is nearly spent.

Sir Amig will take three opponents to cover off Rodric only taking one. Ken, pick which opponent you want Rodric to fight - a spearman or a shield warrior.

The rest of you are fighting two opponents. The injured spearmen, and a shield warrior. Split your attack skill appropriately.

Tactical Notes:
1. You do not have to attack both your targets, but you will be attacked by 2. Note the shield warrior skill - you might be OK ignoring them.
2. If your effective skill is 20 or better, you cannot miss. If your effective skill is greater than 20, add the surplus beyond 20 to the die roll. Any result equal to or greater than 20 is a crit.

Rolls Required:
Attack Roll (Spear Expertise or Sword): +5 to effective skill (after you split your skill if you choose to split it)
Damage if you succeed (use steed damage for spear, use personal damage for sword)
Horsemanship roll: (Rodric is -5 due to having a passenger on his mount).

Cedwyn charged forward yelling yet another battle cry, sword aloft in his hand and gleaming in the mid-day sun. Fortunately, God was with Cedwyn this time, and he able to strike against the filthy, vile Saxons invading the land of the Britons. He managed to get what felt like a satisfying hit on the spearman. He continued but was unable to connect against sword holder.

Rodric wasn't exactly pleased to have been ordered to only go after one opponent, it meant Sir Amig had to pick up his slack.  But he understood, he would need a long while to heal from his injuries already, and above all, he was a knight and would follow the orders of his superior.

Drawing his sword he held it high as they rode into the line of saxons.

Rodric gets a good, solid swing in and brings down the wounded spearman. Cedwyn likewise brings down the spearman, but in so doing the shield warrior catches him on a flank and scores a serious hit. Cedwyn manages to stay in the saddle, however. Gwyn brings down his spearman, and both Gwyn and the shield warrior miss their attacks.

Elsewhere, your unit does very well, despite facing off against two opponents. Overwall, this engagement has been a triumph. Sir Amig orders you to advance, and the wedge you have driven into the Saxon lines goes deeper, but the risk of you becoming encircled increases! "On, forward!" he orders.

Sir Amig's daring move has driven your wedge through the Saxon lines into their rear! Your success has helped bolster the rest of the army. Though they remains bogged down fighting the Saxons, their lines firm up a little, and the tatters begin to repair. For the first time, it appears you have room to breathe. You are still engaged, but the pressure has lessened significantly.

Sir Amig, suddenly free to manoeuvre somewhat, orders you to wheel tot he right. "Turn around! Attack their rear! Hold on knights! We'll break them yet!"

As a unit, you wheel to the right and move to engage the enemy rear rank, where you see a group of lightly armed javelineers throwing their weapons into the general melee.

Cedwyn stuck with his sword, blood dripping from the sharp-edged weapon.

He swung at the first javelineer he could reach and felt a satisfying snick and meaty slicing sound as his sword bit deep.

The panic of the fleeing Javelineers spreads like ripples through the Saxon army, as warriors all over the battle start to look to their rear for fear of being attacked from behind. Uthers troops respond, and your lines firm up and even begin advancing. Your unit is still dangerously exposed. Sir Amig, sensing the way the wind of battle is blowing, waves his spear. "Pull back! Hold the line and pull back!"

If this is successful, you will be able to charge the enemy rear. However, if this fails, you'll be behind enemy lines and cut off from support.

As you pull back, a group of spearmen follow you, keeping you engaged.

Rodric took a swing as his mount pulled back, but the movement was enough to throw the knight off balance slightly and cause his swing to go wide.

Unfortunately God was not with Cedwyn as Sir Amig ordered the pullback He swung his sword at the first available spearman but completely messed leaving him somewhat unbalanced in the saddle.

[Totally with this round. Sort attack: 15 based skill, -5 due to pull back, +5 due to mounted. Roll = 19. Failure. Horsemanship: skill at 10. Roll equals 15. Failure]

You wheel and attempt to withdraw. The spearmen match your pace, however, and close with you. Trying to keep in line while pulling back makes combat difficult, and Rodric is run through by a  great spear. He slumps forward. His hapless squire tries to hang on to him, but it is too much and Rodric slips to the ground. Helpless to aid him, Cedwyn also takes a spear thrust. Unable to stay in control, Cedwyn falls back. His horse rears, and Cwedyn is dumped out of the saddle to land on the ground. Gwyn manages to get a shield up in time, but still takes a solid hit. As the line pulls back, Gwyn cannot stay int he saddle and slumps forward to slid out of the saddle and land on the ground in a heap. In moments the three knights are overrun by the spearman, their squires helpless to aid them. For the three knights from Salisbury, the battle is over.

Sir Amig's unit sustained losses in his daring move, but he successfully disengaged. With some space between him and the enemy, he rallied his unit for a full on charge against the enemy rear. Sir Amig's charge broke the Saxon right, and within minutes the Saxons were sounding the retreat. With the losses sustained, Uther does not order a pursuit. Though the Cymric knights hold the field of battle, there is no sign of Sir Cedwyn, Sir Rodric or Sir Gwyn. Despondent, their retinues and squires recover the knight's share of the plunder and prisoners and head back to Salisbury with the King's army.
