Adventures / Year 488 - The Battle of Aure Valley
« Last post by GM Craig on September 12, 2019, 09:50:58 AM »
It is mid afternoon before you get close to the area, and have your battle lines drawn up. As your troops start to crest the opposite hill, a cheer rises from the Frankish lines, and several sections of their lines start to surge forward. But as your men keep coming in disciplined formation, the cheers die as they see more and more of your forces, and those unruly soldiers who first rush to meet you quickly return to their lines. The two armies stand there for a time as Sir Cedwyn's troops tighten their formations, while the outnumbered Franks adjust to this new reality.

Pennants swing in a light breeze on both side. The terrain is fairly straight forward. Each force stands atop opposite sides of a valley between hills. There is a small creek flowing down the middle of the valley. The Franks are flanked on one side by a copse of wood, and on the other by the open hills, Behind both armies lies open plain.

Tensions start to rise as both armies prepare for what is to come.

You see a few pennants on the other side - indication that there are some knights present in the opposing force.

I need to know how you're arraying your forces, specifically your knights. They could all be together, or you could scatter them around. Battles are generally conducted as Left, Centre, Right sub-battles. The Centre is usually key, but sometimes commanders will put their weakest troops in the centre to try and prevent them from breaking.

I also need to know if you are holding anyone in reserve, and where Sir Cedwyn will be for this battle. Some commanders lead from the front, others sit back and observe so they can issue orders in response to changing conditions.

Arne grinned ferociously, drew his sword and held it high for all of the Nordheimers to see, and roared,  "<Skeggǫld, Skálmǫld, Skildir ro klofnir!>"

(OOC:  Translation as, "Axe time!  Sword time!  Shields are splintered!")

Cedwyn nodded, "Then to battle we go, by God!"

He signaled to his squire, [INSERTNAME], to pour wine for them.

Cedwyn then raised his cup, "To battle!"

Arne nodded in acknowledgement to Sir Cedwyn's statement, and tightened his grip on the horse's reins.  "Yes, let's take them now before they have time to close ranks and make ready for us."

"I will inform the men so that they will be prepared." Geoffrey replied, waiting a few moments before leaving in case Cedwyn had anything else to add.

Cedwyn nodded, "It is for certes now that they know we are aware of them. That may break them some and set them to running faster. Regardless, I wish to smash them here and now and move forward. If we can capture their lords, so much the better but breaking their little army will do for now."

"None that I saw.  It appeared as if they were confident they would catch us off guard."

Cedwyn laid out the field.

"At this point, we've been on the march too long and they are ready for us. Sir Geoffrey...were there any signs of potential reserves or support columns for that lot? If not, I say we simply overwhelm them. It's not glorious but at this point I simply want this campaign over so we can go home. There's been little plunder and even less glory."

A force of knights on the flank would be more likely to break them. Risky for the knights, and a broken army will be hard to contain, but potentially great glory for the participants (and the leader who ordered it), as the leadership might be exposed.

So, it'll be a shorter battle, most likely, and pose the greatest risk to the knights. Overwhelming them will make it harder for the enemy to escape, but will likely bring greater casualties to your infantry, and the leadership would be more likely to escape.

[ooc: Craig...did I read your earlier post as saying having a force of knights coming up on their flank would make it easier for them to escape. As opposed to a full assault...where if we go all-in attacking they'd be overwhelmed?]
