A Messenger comes to Falt (Winter 488)
« on: December 11, 2017, 03:19:48 PM »
A messenger arrives one blustery day late in midwinter, requesting to speak with Arne, Valka, and Holmgærðr.

The young man, wearing the colours of the Earl of Salisbury - a squire, likely - gives Arne, Holmgærðr and Valka a bow.

"I bear greetings from the Earl of Salisbury. He wishes to continue the employment of your people, under the existing terms. In the spring, he sails to Gaul, and will take all the soldiers you can provide him. Further, he bids you come prepared for a forty-day campaign. He does not expect to be able to get supplies after we sail, so be sure you stock up, and carry extra war gear with you. If you are not able to provide for yourself he can do so, for a reduction in your pay." He bows again. "Take time to discuss the matter if you wish, but the Earl bade me wait for an answer before returning."

Arne returned the squire's bow and said, "Understood, sir.  If you could give us an hour or so to tally our muster and gear, we shall have an accurate account for you to report to Lord Roderick.  In the meantime, can we offer you the hospitality of out settlement?  Perhaps a meal and drink while your mounts are curried, fed and watered?"

He nods. "Thank you, I will." He is taken away for refreshment, and the three of you are left alone.

[You'll need to buy supplies. That's not terribly expensive. As for warriors, the exact numbers are not important, but the Earl said he will employ as many as you can bring him. Up to you if you want a force left behind to protect the settlement.]

You guys don't necessarily need a garrison, as you are leasing lands on Falt. Technically, it is the lord of Falt's responsibility to protect you.

Up to you, of course. You could "press" your people to increase the numbers you bring, but that will increase unhappiness. Still, you and Valka are in pretty good standing with your people, so you have some freeboard there to bring them down a bit if you want.

Arne drummed his fingers against the table for a few moments, then grinned broadly.  "Gaul!  I've longed to see new lands, and there will be glory and riches to be had, yes?  So . . . perhaps we take forty warriors with us, and have three stay behind to watch over the settlement.  They could also help training new warriors here.  Now, how much will we need to spend on war gear and supplies for forty days?"
