Roll results
« on: June 20, 2014, 07:23:01 AM »
Just looking to clarify for how the system works.

It's only for passions and traits that you want to roll lower than your value right?  I was glancing through the book and it talked about a 20 being a critical success and 1 being a critical failure for skills.

Near as I can tell, you always want to roll lower than the number for the skill. If you roll the number of the skill, trait or passion exactly (after modifiers), it's a critical success. If you roll a 20, it's a fumble (unless your modified skill, trait or passion is 20 or higher). Lower numbers are always better, unless you roll exactly of target number, then it's a crit. 20's are always fumbles, unless the modified target is 20 or higher, then you can't fumble.

There are also modifiers to the die roll itself. Lower numbers are better, so -5 to something is good, +5 is bad.

Let's look at Cedwyn's courtesy roll. He's got a 12 in the trait, which means he ordinarily needs 12 or less to be successful. I gave him a +2 penalty for still being dirty from the road (his appearance would have distracted people from his manners). His modified skill is thus 10. He rolled a 14, which is a failure. If he rolled a 10, it would have been a critical success, and probably earned him some Glory. If he rolled a 20, that's a fumble, and he probably would have made a scandalous social gaffe.

The above covers unopposed rolls. Opposed rolls are somewhat different - you have to roll under your target, but higher than your opponent. It's a little more nuanced than that, but that's the basic gist.

Make sense?

Okay, now I get it.  I read the example wrong.  It said a critical success (rolling your exact modifier) is treated as a 20, not a 20 is a critical success.

Right, but the "treated as a 20" is really only a factor in competing rolls. Say your sword skill is 15, you're fighting saxon with an Axe skill of 18. You roll a 15 (a crit) and he rolls a 17, a success. By the pure rolls, he would beat you, but since you rolled a crit, when we compare them, it is as if you rolled a 20, so you beat his 17.

I'm starting to think I should have focused more on a few skills instead of trying to get so many to an 'average' value.

We well-rounded knight is a good knight. You'll be using a lot of skills as the game goes along. There will be times at court, battles, skirmishes, being sent as emissaries, Intrigue, politics, etc. Being well-rounded is a good choice, in the long run.

And as years go by, your skills will advance fairly quickly.

Also, you can take what you learned here, and apply it to your heir. :)

I wouldn't sweat it yet.

It'll be interesting to start that's for sure.  But seeing as the dice roller seems to like rolling low for me maybe it'll work out.  Here's hoping. :)

Keep in mind you guys are also barely knights, and very young from a knightly perspective. Skills and traits will advance fairly quickly, depending on the Glory you gain.
