The boy shakes his head, but seems uncertain. "No? To be honest, sirs, I've never been around any official meetings. The Praetor does not often meet with people from other kingdoms. He is, ah, not known for patience with outsiders. My advice to you is to be brief and direct. He is a solider, and has little patience for flowery talk or long speeches."

Arne grinned; just as Duke Roderick has told them.  "Good counsel that we shall heed, then.  Let us go meet the Preator."  He hesitated, then said, "You already know our names, squire, but we do not have the honor of knowing yours."

He ducks his head. "Sirs. I was born Sawel ap Neddig, but the Praetor calls me Felix Sawel Neddig Fillius." He looks at Valka. "If you just use Felix, everyone will know who you mean."

A strange name -  a mix of Roman form, and Cymric words.

Cedwyn nodded, "Lead on Squire Felix. To the Praetor."

He offered the boy a smile.

Several... altercations? later, you get through the several rings of sentries. They are, uniformly, unhappy to be dealing with outsiders. However, though they are dismissive of Felix, they do allow you entry to the camp. Finally, you stand before the Praetor's tent.

You are kept waiting for several minutes while Felix is brought inside. You hear indistinct voices within - Felix's pleading, and another, firmer voice clearly expressing displeasure. While that is going on, a ring of knights wearing modified Roman armour keep their unhappy eyes on you. You feel more like prisoners than emissaries. They do not even offer you chairs, refreshment, or water to wash with.

At length, the Paetor emerges. Heraut de Aprés is, to all appearances, Roman. The short cropped yellow hair, the colour of his skin - even the hawkish nose. His face clearly shows impatience. He is dressed in the roman fashion, with a bronze breast plate, leather skirt studded with disks, and a broad short sword on his hip.

Felix is behind him, being dragged by two knights. As soon as they emerge, Felix is led a short distance away out of sight behind the tent.

Heraut looks you over, clearly unimpressed. "I presume you have some documentation?"

You hand over Uther's letter.

"Your credentials appear to support your claim.

You hear the distant crack of a whip, and Felix cries out in pain.

Heraut nods, and a servant scurries forward with a fine chair. He takes a seat.

"Why have you disturbed me on campaign?"

The whip cracks again, and Felix cries out. He is somewhere behind the king's tent.

Cedwyn spoke as was his right, "Your Grace," he began as a term of respect, "We were given orders by our liege to seek you out as His Grace King Uther's emissaries. His Grace did not say we were to wait for Your Grace to return from campaigning. We were given a directive and so we undertook it," and then added, "And if I may speak freely, I would think if Your Grace were to send an Embassy to King Uther, there would be an expectation for them to undertake such efforts as to meet their mandate rather than dally and wait for His Grace to return from the field."

He grows bored by the second "Grace." He waves and interrupts you halfway through your third sentence.

"I am no perfumed courtier, easily flattered. I am also not impressed by your 'king' [the air quotes are obvious in his tone], nor his ambitions. You may refer to me as Praetor, nor not at all. You grow swiftly tedious. Speak plainly, or be gone from my sight. I have a campaign to conduct."

The whip cracks again, this time eliciting only a whimper.

Cedwyn nodded, "Praetor. We are here as emissaries of Uther Pendragon to ask your support for his election as High King. But we can also support your campaign. We have information regarding the location of the Saxon raiders's ships."

He waves dismissively when you mention the bit about the high king. When you mention information, he glances behind you to the bound Saxon prisoners. He leans forward in his chair, and his eyes narrow. "Where are these ships?"

You appear to have captured his interest.

"They came by ship, Praetor. They found a navigable channel through the Humber's swamps and now lay at anchor at a marsh at the river's head. They Re beinging all their plunder there. If your legion marches upon them, you can take out the head of the snake, then defeat in detail the rest of the Saxons as they return from pillaging."

He strokes his clean-shaven chin for a moment. "What do you intend with the prisoners?"

Cedwyn said, "I would offer them up for ransom to their chieftain. They were ahorse so they have some value to their tribe."

[I need a roll. Intrigue, Courtesy or Recognize. Your choice, but outcomes will be different depending on the skill you chose, both for failure and for success. You're trying to get a read on the Centurion King, while also looking out for Uther's interests. And, keep yourselves out of trouble to boot.

Anyone else is welcome to make those same rolls as well to realize what is going on, and possibly intercede if things go pear-shaped.]
