Cedwyn dropped the spear. It was good for a charge but Witchbane was his first and best weapon. The blade cleared its sheathe with a soft whisper of steel on leather. Cedwyn brought it down on the closest uninjired Saxon.

Pleased, but trying not to be overly proud at his success, Artaigne turned and brought his blade around again at the Saxon that he injured in the charge looking to make his foe yield.

Surprised and yet not surprised the Saxons decided to team up on her, Valka returned the attack two-fold, determined to make up for missing out on the previous group of Saxons.

OOC: Two spear attacks splitting 15 to 7 and 8, +5 horseback
Base 7+5 = 12
1d20 <= 12 v 18 ... failure

Base 8+5 = 13
1d20 <= 13 v 8 ... success
Dmg 5d6 - 1 + 2 + 6 + 3 + 6 = 18

Ken sent me a PM asking me to roll for him.

He is interposing himself between Valka and one of her opponents.

1d20 +4 <= 20
11 + 4 = 15 ... success

Arne growled in frustration as his overhand chop missed the second spearman, but at least he'd slashed the first one badly enough that the man was out of the fight for the time being.  Nudging his horse a few paces forward, he quickly pivoted his sword around and aimed a hard thrust at the second Saxon's chest.

To hit chance: 15+5 = 20
To hit roll:  13 (success)
Damage (5d6):  13 (bleah!)

Character      Roll      Opponent Roll   OpponentResult
Arne (26)13/2012/10 (fail)Saxon Spearman (15)(13-4) 9 damage
Artaigne (29)14/205/10 (success)Saxon Spearman (-7/24) dead(25-4) 21 damage
Cedwyn (29)6/2020/10 (crit fail)Saxon Spearman (1/24) unconscious(27-4) 23 damage
Rodric (28)15/2017/10 (fail)Saxon Spearman (17/24)   0 (pulled hit)
Valka (28)8/1318/10 (fail)Saxon Spearman (10/24) Major Wound(18-4) 14 damage

Arne swings at his opponent, but only scores a glancing hit. The Saxon keeps his feet. Artaigne, however, completely runs his saxon through with his sword so thoroughly that he has to kick the dying body off his blade. Cedwyn slashes at his target, deeply denting the helmet. The Saxon collapses. Valka makes an attempt on one of her opponents, but she cannot land a blow. Rodric quickly spurs his horse to interpose himself between Valka and one of her attackers. Valka, free from distraction, lands a blow against her opponent, severely damaging the Saxon's shoulder. He goes down, alive but incapacitated.

Arne's opponent twisted partially out of the way of his lunge, and instead caught a graze across his torso.  Arne gritted his teeth as he whirled the blade up high, and brought it whistling down toward the Saxon's head.

While keeping one eye on the fight the Chieftains were waging, Cedwyn took a look around to check for signs of any other Saxons that had gone further west.

"Sir Rodric, Sir Artaigne. I can keep watch on our boon companions whilst they finish off their Saxons. Would both of you be willing to scout say up to a mile west. If you see anything, return henceforth so we may decide our next steps."

He then indicated the ships and added, "Whatever we may do, it behooves us to search these ships for treasures."

[Awareness: roll 6 vs skill 12. success.]

Rodric was a little hesitant to split up, being in what was essentially hostile territory and the fact that by now, all the other Saxon camps had to know something was up and would be ready.  Wouldn't they?  This camp seemed largely unprepared, despite the number they faced.

The knight gave Cedwyn a nod and prepared to head out as soon as Artaigne was ready.

"Keep a weather eye out," Cedwyn said, "Do not engage any Saxons but come back. Be careful, my friends."

Returning his sword to its scabbard, the Irish warrior checked his saddle and made a quick adjustment to the girth strap to improve the animal's comfort before indicating that he was ready to move out.

Valka turned to defend herself from the second Saxon but found Rodric had beaten her to the punch. She'd have to thank him later. For now, her defense turned into offense as her spear tip went for a kill instead of merely pushing aside an attack.

OOC: 1d20 <= 20 v 1 ... success (1? on a 20, really?)

Character      Roll      Opponent Roll   OpponentResult
Arne (23/26)2/20 (success, loss, shield)   6/10 (success)Saxon Spearman (15/24)(19-10-6) 3 damage
Valka (26/28)1/20 (success, loss, shield)6/10 (success)Saxon Spearman (17/24)   (14-6-6) 2 damage

Arne takes a powerful overhand swing, but the Saxon gets the spear in under the strike. Arne gets his shield on play, and shield and armour turn a major hit into a glancing blow. Valka likewise takes a powerful stab with her spear, but her opponent steps aside, and thrusts himself. She catches much of the blow on her shield, her armour absorbing much of what was left, leaving a ragged scar on her leather armour.

Meanwhile, Sir Rodric and Artaigne thump their horses ribs and take off at at a trot to scout farther up the river.

Cedwyn's horse walks over to the nearest Saxon ship where he gives it a look over. The ships appear to have much the same loot and supplies as the last batch did. Noting extraordinary, but if you wanted to load up your horses with what is present there - a very heavy load given the dozen ships - you might get a few hundred denarii (d) worth of supplies and trade goods. There doesn't appear to be any loot, per se.

I need attack rolls from Arne and Valka. You are at +5 effective skill for fighting on horseback against opponents on foot.
