[Battle] Based on their alert level, you could probably be among them before they could even get weapons ready. If you do well on your attacks, or even a spear charge, you could very quickly be 3 on two, much better odds.

"I am for striking now, if you are in agreement...the chance to burn three more ships while only facing five men seems like a worthy risk.  A delay may cost us dearly, and I can help but think that we are going to be facing many more Saxons soon."

Cedwyn gave each ship a once over before he began burning it.

[Awareness: two rolls 10 and 1 versus 12. Success.]

Cedwyn finds another small chest with a couple hundred danarii in it, and another bundle of 6 riding spears.

[oooh...spears are good]

Cedwyn threw the chest off the boat and the spears as well.

"I found more spears as well," he noted, "And more denarii...it's not much but we'll decide what to do later."

He then fired those ships as well.

[OOC: So if Rodric and Artaigne are going to attack, I need to know if it is a spear charge, or if you go in swinging swords. Or if you reconsider and walk away.

Spear Charge is +10 to skill level, one target only. Sword is at +5, and you can split your attacks if you wish.]

(OOC:  Arne's busy grabbing bundles of spears (both types) and chucking them on board the ships as fast as he can, but he'll save a pair of the normal ones each for Artaigne, Valka, Cedwyn and Rodric.  Oh yes, he's also watching for anyone approaching.)

[ooc: Cedwyn would tell him to burn only the Great Spear. Riding spears must be saved]

Ooc: I think I am technically sans spear so sword it is.

Ic: "I shall take the right," Artaigne said.  It would allow both men to have their weapon arms on the correct side.  Pulling his sword free, he loosened his arm with a couple practice swings before preparing to attack.  At Rodric's word he spurred his horse to battle with a prayer to St Brigitte on his lips.

ooc: sword skill is 17 with 5 extra skill for 22 effective skill.

8 vs 20 success!
22 damage

Rodric was about to draw his sword but decided to ready his spear. His reasoning, the sight of a knight bearing down on them with the spear might give them reason to try to scatter rather than prepare a defence.

Giving Artaigne a nod of readiness he spurred his horse on.

[OOC: Spear attack roll result 6 vs skill 20, success. Modified result 16.

Damage 14]

Character      Roll      Opponent Roll   OpponentResult
Artaigne (29)8/20-Saxon Spearman (6/24) disabled(22-4) 18 damage
Rodric (28)6/20-Saxon Spearman (14/24)(14-4) 10 damage
---Saxon Spearman (24/24)-
---Saxon Spearman (24/24)-
---Saxon Spearman (24/24)-

The two knights thunder down on the unaware Saxons. The pounding of hooves soon draws their attention, but they look around trying to determine what it is. Too late, one of them spots you, and they scramble for their weapons. None of them are able to bring their weapons to bear before you slam into them.

Artaigne runs his target through the chest near the shoulder, and he slides off the sword clutching his ruined chest. Rodric clips him with his spear, but that Saxon stays in the fight. As you recover from the charge, the Saxons manage to arm themselves, though they are still disorganized.

[Actions?]

You each have two opponents. Split your attack skill as you wish (including zero if you want). Each attack is at +5 effective skill.

Rodric was a little dismayed that he failed to drop his target but they were committed. He dropped his spear and drew his sword, focusing primarily on his initial target, hoping that wouldn't leave him open to the other Saxon.

[OOC: splitting sword attack skill of 19 into 14/5
First attack roll result 13 vs skill 19, success. Damage 16
Second attack roll result 2 vs skill 10, success. Damage 17]

Pleased to have reduced the number of combatants by one, Artaigne focused on the other enemies he faced.  Looking to maneuver them into a position where he could strike at both of his foes.  Lashing out with his sword at the right hand enemy, he looks to use the momentum to power a second attack on the other.

Ooc: sword skill of 17 split as 10 and 7
Attack 1: 10 vs 15 success, damage 27
Attack 2: 13 vs 12 failure

Character      Roll      Opponent Roll   OpponentResult
Artaigne (29)   10/15 (success)   18/10 (fail)Saxon Spearman (1/24) incapacitated   (27-4) 23 damage
Artaigne (29)13/12 (fail)15/10 (fail)Saxon Spearman (24/24)-
Rodric (28)13/19 (success)9/10 (sucess, lose)   Saxon Spearman (2/24) unconscious   (16-4) 12 damage
Rodric (28)2/10 (success)13/10 (fail)Saxon Spearman (11/24)(17-4) 13 damage

With battle joined, the huge Artaigne swings his sword with deadly force, easily cutting down one of his opponents. The blow unbalanced him however, and his second strike against the Saxon still fumbling with his spear amounts to nothing.

Rodric, with great skill but lacking power, manages to score hits against both his opponents. The Saxon wounded in the charge collapses, and the second target takes a solid blow but is very much still in the fight.
