(Ooc: She's just defending Arne and not rolling damage. The Saxon is all his when Arne's done :)

Valka can't reach the one Arne attacked - out of her zone. If she's going to protect Arne, it has to be the one closest to her.

Valka shoves her horse between Arne and the Saxon to his right, protecting his flank from the wounded Saxon. She manages to block the Saxon's attack, leaving Arne free to deal with the uninjured Saxon on his left. He brings his sword around, but the Saxon ducks underneath Arne's strike. Arne brings his shield into play, but the Saxon spear gets past the shield and rams home. Arne gasps as the spear rends metal and flesh. Nerveless fingers loose their grip on the sword, and Arne, still impaled, falls from his horse to land with a thump on the sandy beach. The Saxon pulls the spear out, eliciting a gasp from Arne, and turns to face Valka.

Further down the line, Cedwyn stabs his opponent in the shoulder, and he drops the spear to clutch his wound, out of the fight.

Rodric swings at the crippled Saxon and cuts down his helpless opponent. he swings on the other side and knocks the Saxon senseless with a blow to the head. He collapses on the sand.

Artaigne scores a hit as well, knocking his opponent to the sandy beach. The Saxon struggles to rise, but collapses again.

Cedwyn felt rage overwhelm him as he saw Arne fall. He pushed it down but a wrathful and sorrowful, "Nooooooo!" Escaped his throat as he wheeled from his downed Saxon and brought his spear around to kill this creature who dared myrder a boon companion.

And while it was likely a vain hope...

"sir Artaigne! Would our Lord and Savior and His Most Holy Father consent to your Relic being prayed over Arne. Ask for his healing though he be pagan...he has served the good Christian folk of Logres and leads his people with grace."

Rodric registered Arne falling to the ground after being hit but the severity of his wounds did not.  The knight was too focused on the saxons still in the fight.

Rodric wheeled his horse around and moved into a better position to attack if the few that were still standing remained so by the time he could be ready.

“Arne!!!”

Valka’s heart leaped out of her chest as she witnessed his fall. She knew that greatspear had hit the mark and she feared for the worst.

She now had two Saxons at each side to deal with but all she wanted in that moment was to go to her husband. The young woman’s sapphire eyes flicked up at the Saxon that struck him, the eyes all the seeming of a dragon’s.

Her ruby lips curled into a snarl and instead of the shield again she bared the razor blade of her spear to attack the first Saxon and just as quickly spun to the other side. With a ear-splitting shriek she stabbed at the second one, bringing a culmination of her hatred for the Saxons and her love for Arne to bear on the godless dog that fell him.

“Óðinn á yðr alla!!!”

Ooc:
Valka spear damage #2 Prepare to die
5d6 - 6 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 3 = 19
Valka spear damage #1 That's my husband
5d6 - 6 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 13
Valka spear attack #2 (+5)
1d20 <= 12 v 1 ... success
Valka spear attack #1 (+5)
1d20 <= 13 v 12 ... success

With no enemies in reach and a fallen comrade to be cared for, Artaigne moved to protect Arne from a Saxon looking to score a finishing blow on the downed Northman.

Arne (-2/26) dying

Artaigne takes a few moments to move toward Arne with the goal of protecting him. Sir Cedwyn expertly moves Peredur into postion to attack the Saxon that brought down Arne. He scores a hit, crippling the Saxon.

Beside Sir Cedwyn, Valka's eyes stream tears as she unleashes a bestial roar. She slashes her spear across the chest of the wounded Saxon. He slumps to the ground, quite unconscious. Without waiting, she screams at the Saxon that brought Arne down, and lashes out with the spear on the now crippled Saxon. Valka's spear drives home, stabbing the Saxon in the chest. The previously crippled Saxon collapses in a heap, unconscious.

The battlefield is quiet, save for the excited stamping of horse hooves and the moans and cries of the wounded.

And there lies Arne, thick red blood welling from under his Northman armour. He is alive, but fading.

Blinded by tears, Valka calls out to Arne repeatedly as she tossed her shield to the ground, leaving the spear in the Saxon. Dismounting with less than grace she dropped down next to him and with shaking fingers started ripping his chest armor off to expose what she knew was there.

“It's me, Arne, it's Valka, I'm here,” she cried.

Cedwyn gently pulled Valka away.

"Cradle his head for me, Valka," Cedwyn said, "I can help him, but I need you clear."

His tone was gentle but firm. She needed to be back.

Cedwyn set to work. His dagger came out and cut open the leather armor. Blood welled everywhere and made a mess.

"Clean cloth now!" Cedwyn called, "Wine! Or Ale or aqua vitae too! I must needs cleanse the wound."

Cedwyn took Arne's free hand.

"Hold on my friend...you aren't going anywhere yet."

Cedwyn took any proferred alcoholic fluid and washes his hands in it...then begane cleaning Arne's wound. This was going to be tricky and hard. By God.

Cedwyn prayed hard in whispers.

"Dear Lord. I am not a prayerful man by any measure. Lord...please guide my hands. Lend me Your sight so that I may help this man. Though he be a pagan he is a good man deserving of Your Grace."

After all this, a bumbling Saxon footman killed me?  "I see you, Valka,"  he wheezed, bringing up blood, as he fumbled to grasp her hand.  "Listen . . . all of you.  Piss on the Praetor.  You've . . . done what your king asked of you.  Go back, and take Valka with you.  I'll not . . . see our daughter lose father . . ." he grimaced as a spasm of pain shot through his torso, ". . . and mother this year."

He pointed feebly with his other hand to the Saxon ships.  "Put me on  . . . a ship with some of these dogs at my feet, and set fire to it so  . . . so I can go to Valhalla.  Don't  . . . leave my body to these scum."

OOC:   Graaaaaahhhh!  Simultaneous posts again!  Sorry, but mine goes better before Cedwyn's.  Ties in better.   ;D

Valka swiped at her eyes and moved to Arne's head out of the way of Cedwyn.

"No," she said in their native tongue. "We will go home, but you are coming with me." She blinked back more tears and rested her forehead on his. "You'll not leave me here alone. There is still so much to see. Children to have. Saxons and Giants to sacrifice together."

She gripped him tighter and started praying to Freya to not take him yet.

Artaigne pulled out his relic and held it as he said his own prayers to the Saint and the Lord Christ, asking for their aid in restoring Arne to health.
