[ooc: Cedwyn would ask what to know about the King...]

Cedwyn bowed to his lordship. This was a great honor indeed! To be sent as emissaries of the King himself, independent of oversight. There was a great deal of trust there, especially with the Thulians.

"My lord Earl. We are honored...deeply so. If it please you, can you tell us more about King Ither's prior dealings with King Malahut. How are His Grace's relationships with the Centurion King?"

[OOC: General information all British knights would know...]

In the time when King David reigned in Judea, Eburacus was a powerful and successful king of Britain. He conquered parts of the continent, and he established many cities. Eburacum was one of those. It grew to be an important and wealthy city, with thousands of people living on both sides of the Ouse River. In Roman times, the city was a legionary fortress and provincial capitol. The Roman walls still enfold the royal city on the north side of the river. More recently, King Heraut de Apr?s has enclosed the civilians in the southern settlements within a new defense work and erected a new castle, where he now resides.

Malahut is ruled by King Heraut de Apr?s. He is called the Centurion King because it is said he has 100 knights in his personal service. He rules a Cymric populace, but is himself of noble Roman ancestry (another reason why he is called the Centurion king). He cleaves closely to old Roman ways, considers himself the last Roman in Britain, and all his forces use Roman-style arms and armour and forms of address, styling himself Preator rather than King.

His army is arguably the strongest in Britain, but with 100 personal knights his household is certainly the strongest. He is a formidable opponent, and a force to be reckoned with. Malahaut is the largest realm in Cambria, and Eburacus is the second largest city in all of Britain.

Heraut is known as a warrior king, and bears no love for any other rulers in Britain. He is thought of by others as very independent, arrogant, standoffish, and rude by most everyone in Britain. However, Heraut is respected as a gifted leader of men and a strong battlefield commander. Many consider him a relic of a time gone by, and that the way of life he clings to will fall as did Old Rome.

He rules his lands with an iron first.

Earl Roderick frowns. "Surely you have heard of the Centurion King. He considers himself the only right and proper ruler of Britain, the last outpost of the Roman Empire. He has no lobe for any Cymric king. I fear you have a difficult task before you to win over Heraut. He is a general first, and has little time for manners or social graces. But you must still make the attempt, and at least leave him with a good impression of King Uther."

Arne pondered this for a few moments, then asked, "Lord Roderick . . . is the Centurion King fighting against any of the Cymric kings now?  Or does he see the Saxons as the greater threat?"

"Saxons have been raiding eastern Cambria, so I expect Heraut has his attentions on the Saxons."

"I do not know how, or if it would be of use to disclose this, but may we let it be known to King Heraut that King Uther is in possession of Excalibur?  Assuming word does not reach him before we do."

Rodric was nervous, it was very obvious that politics wasn't their strong suit.  He wasn't even sure they even had a strong suit.

"Unlikely. It is possible Herault's spies may have learned of it since King Uther revealed it at the winter feast, though I expect the word you bring will be his first news of it."

Cedwyn considered this.

"It would be a sign to King Herrault of His Grace's power and strength. If I recall properly, the Centurion King respects little but strength...of arms and of purpose (possibly)," the young knight noted.

"We cannot appear to be begging; we must carefully choose our words and come to King Herrault from a position of strength. Does that seem right My Lord?" Cedwyn asked of Roderick.

The Earl considers a moment. "The Centurion King is arrogant, and sees himself as being above us 'lowly' Britons. In his mind, he is the rightful ruler of the Roman province of Britannia. You face a difficult choice - come at him from a position of strength and might, or appeal to his arrogance and employ flattery. I cannot direct you in advance - you must gauge his mood and temperament and decide based on what you find when you arrive. You may be dismissed without meeting him - it would not be the first time he has refused an embassy.

Remember that he sees himself above all as a general. Some display of skill in battle may earn you an audience, if not his respect. But there is risk there as well - he may be dismissive, and the chaos of warfare may leave you in a poor position to earn his respect."

Cedwyn considered this as well.

"Then we'll have to read the situation upon arrival. What else should we know my lord? Or need to know?"
