It was an interesting situation to say the least. One Rodric had partially forced upon the legation. If the Praetor agreed to come and travelled with them to Lindsey, all of them would gain honor, prestige, and likely a measure of wealth to add. But, they would need to survive.

"It is a high stakes gamble, Sir Rodric. Sometimes, we have to follow the letter of our writ as guidance. But, I admit, twould be better to return to His Grace in the company of Praetor should we show our true mettle."

He slunk back further. Potential battle plans swirled in his head.

"I suppose we shall see what the morrow brings. We keep to ourselves; see what we can procure in way of weapons, squires, and victuals."

Arne shrugged.  "I have a pair that you can use, Sir Cedwyn."

Valka nearly choked and broke into a small coughing to hide her laughter at the words.

"Are you well, Lady Valka?" Cedwyn inquired.

Valka looked up with bright sapphire orbs as she stopped the coughing fit. She had a dangerous smile on her lips but Cedwin could see mirth in her words, a little jab at a fellow comrade.

"I'm fine, but I'm not the one missing a pair. How well are you?"

Cedwyn raised an eyebrow. Ah, so Valka's cheek showed again. He had to remind himself Valka was neither Christian nor chaste so much. She was a lusty pagan much like Lady Elayne.

"A Knight is always prepared, Chieftainess," he said dryly, he had planned to say something about having more than one wooden shaft but that might insult Arne. Instead, he finished with, "After all, we like to keep performing at our prime."

Arne had to bite the inside of his cheek listening to the banter between Valka and Cedwyn.  The knight gave a deadpan response to Valka's good-natured jibe, but Arne caught the humor in it.  He almost replied to Sir Cedwyn's last comment by saying, Yes, so Lady Ysbail has told me about her husband, but wisely refrained from doing so.  That would be pushing things too far.  Still, Arne couldn't hide the smile as he looked between Valka and Cedwyn.

Artaigne was not sure what to make of these two foreigners but he was interested in hearing how they fought.  He listened closely to see what he could learn.

"Squires are mounted.  That allows them to stay close and re-arm a knight should another weapon be needed, or assist them in regrouping with others if they are unhorsed and risk being overwhelmed."

Arne nodded.  It was as much as he thought.  "And do Saxon horsemen think that squires are nearly as dangerous as the knights?"

[OOC: Since we seem stalled, I'm going to move on.]

It is a restless night. Well, except for Arne and Valka - the two of them do not seemed troubled by the coming dawn. For the knights, however, they are all too aware how dangerous going into battle without a squire or troops can be. And having pledged themselves to the cause, they cannot really hold back or risk loosing face in the eyes of the Centurion King. This little embassy may well end up costing lives before all is said and done. Cedwyn is haunted by the idea that this is going far beyond the King's mission. That thought is moot, however - Rodric has committed you all.

So you are up and packed early, and already prepared when a knight in roman armour with a centurion plume rides up. He reins in horse in sharply and calls out, "You will join the rear guard of the column." Without waiting for an answer, he rides away.

This could be seen as an insult - the rear guard is the place for junior knights and senior squires to command. In dangerous country where the location of the enemy is not know, rear guard can become very important, but in general it is not a place for glory on the march.

When you report, three hours after the army started marching, you find yourselves placed under the command of a soldier in centurion gear. You ride up and Cedwyn reports you. The soldier on the horse looks down his nose at you. "Very well. I am Centurion Junius. Cover our flanks as we move. Keep an eye out - scouts have seen raiders in the area."

You begin the march. The army snakes its way through the marshes and swamps of Malahaut. Unfortunately this means your mounts are often wading through stagnant pools and brackish salt water marshes. By noon, all of you are covered in mud to the waist, and the march continues.

The next day brings more of the same. You loose track of time under an overcast sky. Then, finally, something new happens. A rider comes swiftly, and you recognize Llyr. He confers with the Centurion who commands you before galloping away. Centurion Junius calls you all in.

"The Saxon dogs have scattered their ships all up and down the Humber River. They are far too scattered to deal with them all together. The Praetor has ordered you to sweep west along the shore and fire any ships you find. Others will sweep east. Destroy any Saxons you find."

Arne executed a smart Roman salute and grinned.  "With great pleasure, Centurion Junius."

Cedwyn also gave a Roman salute, fist to heart.

"We would be most honored Centurion," Cedwyn added, looking to Sir Artaigne and Sir Rodric. Ships would be lightly defended.

"Once we run out of ships to fire, what are our orders?"

"Return to the army rear for further orders. The bulk of the army will be formed up east of here, and south of the river."

Cedwyn nodded, "Understood," and he looked to Rodric, Valka, and Artaigne to see if they were ready to proceed.

Some action would be a welcome respite from the drudgery of the march to this point.  By the grace of God it was to be against lightly defended targets were their lack of equipment would be much less of a hindrance.

Nodding to his liege, Artaigne indicated to the knight that he was ready to proceed.
