Rodric wasn't keen on staying behind when there was the potential for more saxons to feel his blade, but part of him did understand, someone needed to remain to guard Valka and Arne and his sword skill was the best out of the group, though not by much compared to Cedwyn.

"Very well.

I will begin construction of a sledge.  Once it is complete, we will follow, I do not think it wise that we remain here any longer than necessary."

"Agreed," Cedwyn said, "We shan't be gone long. Enough to satisfy that there are no more ships or to find the next set."

"Ready Sir Artaigne?"

[ooc: ready Ben? Let's see if we're done here and can report back so]

"At your command, sir."  Artaigne took to horse again and made ready to follow the senior knight.  He might still debate the plan, but it was not his place to question his lord.

Sir Cedwyn and Artaigne mount up and head out whole Rodric gets to work constructing a sledge from the salvaged lumber from the now fully burning ships.

The mounted knights travel several miles up the riverbank, and find no further sign of any Saxon ships. Turning, they head back.

By the time they return, Sir Rodric and Valka have the sledge constructed, and Arne has been secured for travel.

[You can return Arne to the camp. He will sustain 1 hp damage from the trip, but you can be back in a couple of hours.]

"It looks like this was the last grouping," Cedwyn reported when he and Artaigne returned, "So are we ready to haul Arne back?"

Cedwyn indicated the sledge.

Arne was secured but Valka wasn't finished yet. Tightly gripping an axe in hand she moved back down to the Saxon on the beach. Her grunts and noise of the axe could be heard as it chopped down over and over again.

Eventually she trudged back to the horses, a splattered crimson mess with an even bloodier makeshift bag in her hand, wrapped with the Saxon’s clothes. She secured it as well as a particular greatspear to her horse and made ready to leave.

Rodric couldn't hide the confusion he felt as he watched Valka.  He would admit, he'd been hell bent on killing as many saxons as he could this day, but what Valka had just done...was this for some strange pagan ritual?

The knight kept his lips sealed however, and moved to take up a rear guard position for the journey to meet up with the Praetor and his men.

Artaigne was also ready to return and see to getting Arne what care they could.  He hoped that their success here would please the Praetor and present options for more wealth and glory in the near future.

Dragging the sledge behind you, you make your way back to camp. You see no sign of any Saxons. It is approaching sunset by the time you reach camp.

The camp appears to be a hive of activity, and the energy level is high. You make your way through the camp, Arne being hauled behind you, until you spot Centurion Junius. He is busy giving a series of orders. As you approach he spots you, and hails you.

"Report," he demands.

He can clearly see Arne on the sledge behind Valka, and the riderless horse tethered to Sir Rodric's saddle.

"Centurion, we scouted west as far as the river was navigable. We encountered and fired 33 Saxon ship and killed 28 Saxon raiders scatter throughout. After the last landing we scouted several more miles, finding multiple clearings similar those where Saxons had landed, but with no sign of the dogs anywhere. As best as I can estimate, we have cleared the west of ships," Cedwyn reported.

"We have one casualty, Arne Torvaldson needs the good offices of a chirugeon to attend him."

The Centurion glances at the sledge. "Put him in the sick tent, and get some food. We will be in battle at dawn."

Cedwyn nodded, "If you don't mind me asking: how was the hunting on this end?"

He glanced at Valka. It was likely the warrioress would not appreciate what he was going to say soon.

The Centurion looks annoyed at the question. "Two dozen ships burned, and that many Saxon warriors, most of which scattered and ran."

Cedwyn kept his voice even and mild, "That is good hunting still. Now the dogs have no place to go. That means they will fight fiercely and hard. I assume no quarter?"
