Also, there guys are out raiding farms and villages - not knightly behaviour. You would certainly be within your rights to not extend to them knightly courtesy.

You could try and get him to surrender - doesn't look like there would be much ransom for him though. And Saxons are not known to be men of their word, as evidenced by the Night of Long Knives.

Also, in case it comes up... if your effective skill is 21:, you roll as if it were 20, but take any excess and add it as a Bonus to the die roll. Any result of 20+ is a crit.

So, for an effective skill of 22, you would roll 1d20+2<=22, and any result 20 or more is a crit. In effect, you cannot fail, and have an increased chance of rolling a critical.

Sorry, been a long day and I'm really tired.

If I attack the fallen saxon, my effective sword skill is 19+5 (24). What happens if the net result of the roll is 25?

Hehe...basically. You can't fail this roll. Only difference is that you crit on anything 15 or higher. I think.

The +5 circumstance modifier is just added to your skill, not the actual "to hit" roll.

If your Sword skill is normally 19 and you have a +5 bonus, then your effective Sword skill is 24.  That being said, your Sword skill for "to hit" purposes is 20, but with a +4 bonus to the skill.  So even if you rolled an unmodified 20, there's no way you'd fumble your weapon, and in a competing sword check against your opponent, you'd get a +4 bonus.  On top of all of that, you'd get a critical success on a roll of 16-20.

Actually, there's a situation exactly like the one you're describing on p. 95 of the core rulebook (under Values greater than 20).

No prob.  I couldn't believe my luck when I found that example in the sourcebook.   ;D  Damn, skills above 20 are sweet, even if they are modified.

Speaking of such, was Rodric taking a poke at the Saxon on the ground?  If so, then his modified Sword skill would be 24, not 19.

Is there anything Rodric can do to help without stealing glory?

Maybe give one of the Saxons' horses a covert wee poke in the hindquarters?   ;D

Unless I'm mistaken, Valka and Arne would probably also be able to speak the Saxon language, seeing as it's very similar to the Northman language.  If that's true, then our wee party will have translators if needed.

What kind of skill would that be?  The Saxon might be more willing to spill the beans to either Arne or Valka seeing as the Northmen (and women!) are known to be a bit less . . . knightly.   ;D
