[OOC: I forgot to remind that you had a +5 for charging. Artaigne still misses (19>17) but Valka hits (15<17)]

Artaigne and Valka lead the charge against the defending knights. It could hardly be called sporting - two knights against six opponents could hardly be considered fair odds. However Artaigne and Valka have a job to go, and they're going to do it. Stopping for single combat would likely allow the others to escape, and the Northmen don't really have an ethic that would apply in such situations.

Artaigne looses control of his lance while charging, and misses. The knight manages to land a sword blow as Artaigne rides past, landing a solid blow that is only partially absorbed by Artaigne's armour.

Valka, however, lands a blow on her opponent, but the knight's armour absorbs the full impacts of the blow.

Your horsemen come up next, with two each scoring hits against the knights, who are no longer in a position to defend themselves. You have driven a wedge between the two knights, and they are effectively surrounded and harried. Meanwhile, the other two knights and the individual they are escorting continue to extend away from the fight.

Actions?

OOC: You have the option of staying to finish off the knights. Given they are surrounded, everyone attacking gains a +5 to effective skill, so both Valka and Artaigne now roll <= 17.

Optionally, you can leave at least two of your horsemen behind to keep these knights busy, disengage and take off after the fleeing knights. Up to you, but if you loose sight of them, it will become a hunt. You may want to consider your hunting skill when making the decision.

Inside the manor, the last standing footman drops her sword and raises her hands.

If Sir Cedwyn did the math right, there are likely still some crossbowmen in the manor somewhere, but with the Lady of the manor effectively a hostage, it seems unlikely there will be more trouble.

[50 Glory for Sir Cedwyn for capturing a poorly defended manor and taking a noble prisoner. 25 Glory for Arne for defeating a lesser foe, and participating in the capture of a manor.]

[OOC: Apparently I messed things up in the post. Havd-waving: Valka and her half of the crew attacked and carried on in pursuit of the fleeing knights. Artaigne and three horsemen are staying to harry the two knights who stayed to fight.]

Arne gave the last footman a brief nod, and growled, "<Go stand by your lady, then, and no tricks or attempts to escape.  We have dozens of warriors waiting outside.>"

Without taking his eyes from their captives, he bellowed, "<Hear me, crossbowmen within the manor!  Your Lady has been taken and is now our captive, and her honor guard has surrendered!  Your Lady will not be harmed!  Drop your weapons and come out now, and you will not be harmed!  Refuse or resist, and you will be hunted down and slain!  Make haste, for I am not a patient man!>"

In the manor, half a dozen men and two women wearing padded armour surrender. Sir Cedwyn's troops move in and quickly secure the manor.

Down by the river, Artaigne continues to press the two knights while Valka and her three horsemen attempt to chase down the fleeing knight and his charge.

Artaigne lands a blow, but the knight partially deflects is with his shield, and the knight's armour absorbs much of the impact beyond that. The horseman does not land a blow. With the other knight, the first horseman keeps the knight busy, but does not land a blow. This allows the second northman to come up behind the knight and land a very solid hit. The blow rocks the knight out of the saddle. He hits the ground, and does not move after.

farther down the river, Valka and her horsemen give chase when the lone knight suddenly turns to the left and charges into the river. Valka is surprised to see the horse does not need to swim, as there appears to be a ford there. She gives chase. The shudden drag caused by the water, however, causes Valka's horse to almost stumble, which nearly knocks her out of the saddle. With Valka's horse thrashing a little, the Northmen have some difficulty getting by on the ford. One of them find the edge of the shallows, and horse and rider topple over into the cold water. The second manages to wind through the chaos, but the third's horse balks at Valka's troubled mount, and is not able to clear the river.

The one horsemen is still in pursuit, but the rest of Valka's group will need a moment to get their mounts under control before they can proceed.

For Sir Geoffrey, this could be a difficult time. There is nothing to see, and no evidence of success of failure of those dispatched for their tasks. The surrounding countryside seems clear, and your outriders are in place. Then he sees the banner on the manor house come down - it seems Sir Cedwyn has captured the manor.

I need a horsemanship roll from Valka, and a Sword roll from Artaigne. Include damage if you succeed  - personal damage, not your horse, since you are not using a spear and moving.

Arne watched their hostages warily until Sir Cedwyn's troops came in and led them away.  He let out his breath in a disgusted grunt and all but slammed his sword home in its sheath.  "It was a good thing that my brothers were not here to see how I fared in here, or I would never hear the end of it," he muttered to the knight.

He took in his surroundings again, then glanced outside.  "I do not think any Franks remain inside, Sir Cedwyn.  What is next?"

Goeffrey's horse shifted, almost as if it sensed the knight's restlessness.  When Artiagne spotted the fleeing riders he had wanted to be a part of the pursuit but Cedwyn had placed him in charge of the men, and in his mind at least, that meant staying with the men.  So as a means to help insure success, he'd sent twice as many as were fleeing.  That provided little comfort now, as the thought of failure crept into his mind.  If Artaigne and Valka failed, it would be a failure that would reflect on him.

When his eyes caught banner being lowered it provided little to ease his mind, however there were tasks to perform.

"Take some wagons to the manor, for both loading what Sir Cedwyn has captured, and to bring the injured back so they can be tended to." he ordered.

Beyond frustrated Valka cursed loudly and tried to rein in her horse. Her skills in horsemanship were pisspoor to say the least, because she had to hide all combat training from their father, and their nags for road travel only knew how to eat, shit, and follow the ass of the one ahead of them.

"Keep going!" she yelled at the one rider and motioned for her squire (forgot what we're calling them) to help her cross.

Cedwyn said to Arne, "Ask her to whom her Lord Husband holds fealty. I want to know if they are loyal to the Praetor or to the usurper lord. That will determine what we take from here; she comes with us no matter what as a hostage to her husband's behavior."
