“Sir Artaigne,” Cedwyn said to his knight-adjutant, “Signal to advance in column. We march for that temple and the village.”

Clapped a mail-clad hand to his chest, Artaigne nodded and signalled the advance before putting his horse in position to put deed to command.

Arne waited until it was time for their warriors to start moving, then made an almost bored motion with his sword to signal them forward.  They would keep up the ruse of slovenly mercenaries for any enemy that might be watching, but he knew that all of them would keep a sharp eye out for any possible ambush points, and were prepared to drop the charade within a heartbeat.

(OOC:  Arne will be on horseback, and will look behind them occasionally to make sure they don't get blind-sided by a sneak attack to their rear.)

At the signal, Geoffrey moved his me forward.  It was time to collect some supplies.  The Knight hoped the locals would be smart and not put up any sort of resistance, there was no need for them to throw their lives away.  They may struggle in the coming year with the lack of food but they would live.

Your column diverts towards the hamlet, splitting to cover both objectives. As you approach you can see what appears to be a granary in the village. The group that is heading towards the church catches the glint of treasures within.

Most of the villagers scatter or hide, but one group or about a dozen or so position themselves to block your access to the village. Similarly, another ten have formed a line of bodies between you and the church.

These are clearly peasants and farmers. They are unarmed, and pose no threat to you or your forces. There are a few women among those blocking your advance.

As you get closer, they start yelling at you in what sounds like the Saxon tongue. A couple throw rotten vegetables and refuse at you, but they land short. You can see they have more such ammunition at the ready. There does not appear to be a leader to this rabble.

[Actions?]

Who went to which location? The church and village are far enough apart that you'd have to split your column to advance on both places. You're far enough away at this point that the things they're throwing can't hit you, but the threat is obvious - come closer and you'll have muck and rotten vegetables thrown at you.

There appear to be supplies in the village, including grain, and the church appears a good candidate for plunder.

Cedwyn turned to Haydn, "Have the chieftains join me. I'd rather not put all these villagers to the sword. It'd be a bloody mess and take time."

The columns halt, and everyone spies something of a conference happening. Valka and Arne are summoned, and Sir Geoffrey and Sir Artaigne make their way over as well to hear what's going on.

Arne, receiving a summons from Haydn to join the van, rode up to the front and glowered at the Frankish peasantry throwing refuse and curses at the column.  Without taking his eyes off of the villagers, he said, "They are being stubborn, yes?  What would you have of us, Sir Cedwyn?"

[OOC: Just to clarify, these are Franks, not Saxons. They are a related tribe, and worship the same gods, but are distinct from the Saxons.]

“Do you speak their tongue by any chance?” Cedwyn inquired, “I would rather give them the opportunity to give way than give them an object lesson.”

Given that Cedwyn seemed to welcome input Geoffrey took the opportunity to speak up.

"They stand twenty in number against a force of over two hundred.  It would appear to me as if they have already decided not to give way."

“You are most correct, Sir Geoffrey, but I would rsther give them the option to live. A live peasant makes more grain,” he replied, “And rabble though they be, they could still injure or kill our militiamen.”
