And if the crossbowmen are between us and the lady, my friend?  "Maximum effort," Arne muttered to no one in particular as he charged into the manor, his shield and sword at the ready.

Sir Cedwyn is first through the broken doorway. With his shield up, he picks his way through the wreckage. He steps forward into the entryway, but sees no one there.

Arne, right behind him, steps through but gets hung up on the door, and looses his feet, crashing to the ground with a fair bit of noise. The commotion distracts Sir Cedwyn a moment as he glances at Arne.

Before he is quoite sure what is happening, there is a blood curdling scream, and Sir Cedwyn senses rather than sees something rushing at him.

He manages to get his shield in play, which deflects the spear thrust. His armour absorbs the weakened blow, and what could have been a severe would is reduced to little more than a bruise.

Refocusing in front of him, Sir Cedwyn sees a figure with wild eyes and a feminine face, wearing boiled leather armour and wielding a spear. Behind her, two other similarly armed opponents come through doorways, but they will take time to close.

[Actions?]

Note: this is typical combat. Actions are fairly granular. A move, or an attack, and things like that count as actions. Everyone takes one action. For example, Arne is going to want to stand up (1 actions). Then, he'll likely want to close (1 action) then, on round 3, he'll be able to attack.

For this round, Sir Cedwyn only has one opponent. Next round, he may have three.

"Whooulff!"  The air exploded out of Arne's lungs as a splinter from the door snagged on his belt and sent him sprawling with a loud clatter of mail, sword and shield.  Snarling at his own clumsiness and bad luck - and hoping that Valka and their men didn't see him go sprawling over his own feet like a drunkard -  he spat out a vile curse in his native tongue as he saw a Frankish warrior-woman charge Sir Cedwyn with a spear.  Seizing his sword, he posted off the ground with his shield and scrabbled to his feet.

[Cedwyn Sword: 11 vs 18 skill. Success!  Dmg roll: 16. Focus on concussive damage]

Cedwyn almost sighed. The woman's mad eyes frustrated him...all they had to do was surrender. Either way, the supplies in the holding were going to be taken. Either to support their rightful or as spoils of war. Though the former meant far more would be left than the latter. But...if this woman was highborn she would make an excellent hostage and bring decent ransom.

No sense in being cruel either. So...Cedwyn wielded Witchbane not to kill but rather to incapacitate and concuss the fool woman.

Arne struggles to his feet as one of the other spear-swingers rushes forward to face him. He sees long hair and a decidedly feminine form behind the helmet and armour.

Meanwhile, Sir Cedwyn nimbly blocks a weak spear thrust, and brings his sword down in a powerful overhand smack with the flat of the blade. He hits the helmet of the Frankish woman, ringing her bell a little. She shakes her head, but is still in the fight. She spits blood on the ground, and growls as she presses her attack.

A footman with a spear rushes forward, supporting his apparent mistress. Sir Cedwyn can also see feminine features behind the armour and helmet of this new threat.

[Actions?]

Sir Cedwyn is fighting two opponents. As a refresher, he must decide how to split is Sword skill between the two opponents.

Arne got to his feet just in time to see a Frankish warrior-woman rush at him with a spear.  He grinned ferociously, and let out a challenging roar as he brought up his shield and aimed a downswing cut with his sword at her spear-arm.

(OOC:  No kid gloves from Arne.  Sir Cedwyn's in trouble, and the enemy's expressed no interest in surrender.  So, if Arne's opponent has closed to melee range:   Sword skill of 15, roll of 16 = fail.  I can't believe this.)

Sir Cedwin catches the noble's spear thrust on his shield, but the footman uses the opportunity to strike. Sir Cedwyn is caught off-balance and without his shield in place when the strike comes. Fortunately, his sturdy armour absorbs much of the damage, resulting in another bruise, but no blood. That armour is turning out to be an excellent investment.

Arne is not quick enough, and the frank lands a solid hit. However, the thrust lacked power, and does little more than score Arne's armour and leave a bruise.
