And here I was thinking about coming up with something along the lines of an older brother who'd left (hadn't thought of the reason why), but had come back to avenge the death of his young sibling. :)

The intrigue skill would be the one to try and detect if the old man is lying or up to something right?  I was going to post but I figured the post should reflect the outcome of the skill roll.
