Maelgwyn hands over the belt with an unexpected look of relief, as if he couldn't wait to be rid of it. At your direction, Suger then hands over a rather full purse. Maelgwyn accepts it greedily, and makes to open it up. Suger places a hand on the hilt of his sword.

"I know a man as grateful as you would not insult my lord by counting the coins in front of him?"

Maelgwyn looks startled, then pales. "No, m'lord! Heavens, no! I just..." He trailed off for a moment when he realizes he has nowhere to go with that train of thought. He then tucks the purse into his shirt. "My thanks, my lord. My children will sing of your generosity. I hope you recover your father's sword. He was a good man."

He then turns to go, but catches himself. He turns slowly back to you, head bowed. "By your leave, m'lord, I would go and see to the needs of my family."

Rodric gave the man a nod dismissing him.  As he watched the man disappear around a corner he looked first at the belt the old man had given him and then down at his squire.

"I know you wanted to run the man off, but having learned what we did, despite the cost, would you still have chosen to send him away?"

Suger looks uncomfortable. "It's not my place to question you or your decisions, my lord. But you asked, and duty binds me to give an honest answer: even had I known what he would have said, I would have run the man off. If there is even a grain of truth to that man's story, I lack the wisdom to see it."

"My father sailed with Aurelius Ambrosius to Frisia, where he died in battle.  My family is small and of little importance so it is unlikely that he would have known what he did if there was not at least some truth to his tale.  Whether it was wise or not, the heart of a child that misses his father decided it was worth risking.

One day we will find out which of us was right." Rodric ruffled Suger's hair.

"Come, let us finish what we came to do and be off."
