Breakfast at Winterbourne Stoke
« on: July 08, 2015, 11:53:22 AM »
Too early the cock crows. As expected, enough of the guests have stayed that there is little room in the manor for breakfast for those who desire assemble under the now cleaned and re-set pavilion to enjoy breakfast before parting company. Sir Cedwyn is there waiting, Haydn by his side. The young squire has acquitted himself well, and done an admirable job of looking to the needs of the guests. As Cedwyn greets those who come for breakfast, many stop to praise Haydn's manners and courtesy, and comment that it is an admiral reflection on his lord.

Finally, the Earl's large party arrives. Notably absent from his entourage is his wife, but the others are there. Sir Rodric spots Cedrych there, his daughter on his arm. Cedwyn spots Lady Ysbail, who seems to be giving him more of an appraising eye than she had last night. Also among the Earl's party is Lady Elaine. She appears to be trying to maintain an air of detached amusement, but Cedwyn can tell she is nervous. She is studiously avoiding looking in Cedwyn's direction. It is subtle, and likely only noticed by Cedwyn. Seeing her in the morning light, surrounded by others, Cedwyn is struck how her beauty compares favourably to other women years younger than her.

[Actions?]

Breakfast is a little less formal. Many will be departing soon, so they will not stay long. Most are here for more time with the Earl, so people will be coming and going.

A kind of exhaustion crept through Cedwyn. Elaine was both beautiful and rich. His head said the wealth and power that would come from such a union would be extremely useful. And he felt a certain pity towards her. On the other hand, he had chosen to pursue Ysbail. She was beautiful herself and though she commanded no wealth like Elaine, her dowry would not be insignificant. His head said pick Elaine; his heart-Ysbail.

And so Cedwyn had spent half the night praying for guidance.

It was towards midnight as he realized his own answer. That he prayed was indicative enough. Beautiful and misunderstood as Elaine was, he had chosen to pursue Ysbail. It would discourteous now to change directions without Ysbail explicitly declining.

[just so my reasoning is clear:  being keen on status and having a +5 to Courtesy, Ced would default towards being courteous towards the first lady he had chosen-Ysbail. It is nothing against Elaine. Would it be inappropriate to greet Ysbail an her father?]

Hoping Lady Elaine would understand the gesture, Cedwyn approached Sir Marvin and his daughter.

"Sir Marvin. Good morning to you," turning to Ysbail, Cedwyn added, "And my Lady, a good morning to you as well."

Rodric approached Cedrych and Habren.

"Good morning to you Cedrych." he said to the man, before turning to Habren and giving her a warm smile.

"And a very good morning to you Habren."

Sir Marvin seems a pleasant enough knight, and has many questions for Sir Cedwyn. They are, perhaps, a little more probing that is strictly polite, but under the circumstances, allowances can be made. Haydn is a dutiful squire, and without direction sees to it that Sir Marvin and Sir Cedwyn never need to interrupt their discussion to seek after something.

Habren's colour rises as Sir Rodric approaches the table, and Cedrych smiles warmly and invites Sir Rodric to join him. A very pleasant conversation follows, involving future plans. Habren, a happy smile on her face, listens quietly, but rarely takes her eyes off Sir Rodric. She even, somewhat scandalously, surreptitiously places her hand over Sir Rodric's on several occasions. Cedrych either does not notice, or does not choose to.

partway through breakfast, Suger runs into the tent and brings himself up short. He is dishevelled, hair uncombed and his attire in mind disarray. Pieces of straw cling to his clothes. But, to his credit, he raises his chin and marches up to Sir Rodric's side and begins to wait on his knight. His cheeks blaze red as a few of the guests chuckle at his display, but he gives no other outward sign.

For her part, Lady Elaine sits with the Earl's party. She is quiet, picks at her food, and appears a bit pale this morning, but otherwise looks very much the aloof noblewoman. The only one at the table who speaks to her is the Earl and his wife, but otherwise everything seems a study is decorum.

Eventually, the Earl makes a show of putting pushing back his plate, and rises. The tent grows silent.

"Sir Cedwyn. On behalf of my company, and I think I speak of all others here besides, let me thank you for an excellent feast. As much as I have enjoyed your company, duty calls me away. I must be back in Sarum by noon, so I must away. My squires report our baggage train is packed and horses and carriages are ready. Therefore, I must away."

His party rises and they start heading out of the pavilion, but the Earl walks over to Sir Cedwyn. "Walk with me?"

Outside the pavilion, Earl Roderick waves back his squires, and they remove themselves to a respectful distance.

"Sir Cedwyn, last night I noticed you were involved in quiet conversation with Lady Ysbail. Yet later, I had received a reliable report that you and the Lady Elaine had a conversation last night about marriage. Indeed, Lady Elaine seemed as nervous as a maiden in procession to the tent this morning, which is exceptional in itself for a lady normally so composed as she. Yet over breakfast I saw you in deep conversation with Sir Marvin. I must confess that I was relieved. The Lady Elaine is no maiden, as I am sure you are aware, and requires a strong husband. I have other plans for her in this regard. But you and Lady Ysbail, I think, would be an excellent match. She is noble born, and well trained to be a Knight's wife. If your interests align, I would write to Sir Marvin your behalf to encourage the union. And to further encourage you, I will personally add a libra to whatever dowry Sir Martin offers, contingent on you securing Lady Ysbail's hand."

He pauses and turns full towards you. "Sir Cedwyn, unlike some of my peers, I am not in the habit of delving deeply into the personal lives of my vassals. Beyond concerns for the stability of the county, I leave you to arrange your domestic affairs as you each will. However, this is an exceptional circumstance. I do not command this, but I encourage you to see the wisdom of my counsel."

Cedwyn nodded, "Thank you, My Lord. I am grateful for your offer and do see the wisdom of it; it is my intent to pursue Lady Ysbail. Lady Elaine and I spoke of marriage; agreeing only to think it over for the night. I will confess that I was conflicted till around midnight, praying to God for guidance, which I received in the form of insight. Lady Ysbail is a better match for me."

He paused, "My Lord. May I be so bold to offer counsel regarding Lady Elaine?"

Earl Rodric raises an eyebrow, acknowledging that it is indeed bold of you, but he seems more amused than cross.

Spreading his hands wide he says, "Please."

Cedwyn gulped inside his mind. He measured his words carefully.

"I believe that her discussion of marriage last night was a desperate last measure for some small control over her fate. I got a sense of her desperation as she spoke and saw the melancholy in her eyes. She is effectively outcast at court. That desperation and isolation could be dangerous. If the knight you intend could bring her back into life at court, that may be useful. Especially if the introductions could be arranged sooner, before spring."

Cedwyn bowed his head.

"I apologize if I have spoken out of turn. These are things of which you are probably already aware and thought of."

The Earl raises an eyebrow. "You have a perceptive mind, Sir Cedwyn, but you are only looking at part of the picture. She has, no doubt, woven a sympathetic tale for your ear, seeking to play upon your kindness and generosity. But think on this:

"Her peasants have been discontent since the death of her husband and the hanging of the servant. All four of her manors are near open revolt. Last campaign season her lands did not provide a single soldier to the King's army, and I had to cover the shortfall with mercenaries. You were at Mearcred Creek. Four hundred soldiers would have come in handy.

"She has not been able to gain control of her hands since her husband's untimely death, and matters grow worse every year. The needs and desires of Lady Elaine and her acceptance at court weigh very little compared to the stability of the realm. I will brook no threat to Salisbury. I will pair her with a suitable husband who will rein her in, get those manors under control, and be able to meet his obligations."

He folds his arms on front of his chest and watches your reaction.

Cedwyn did his best to control the redness of embarrassment in his cheeks.

"My Lord is most gracious and most correct. I know not her lands well or her peasants. A strong, upright, and stalwart knight will take care of that problem most efficiently. Those 400 warriors would have made Mearcred much less uncertain. And it seems like the Saxons will continue to press Logres. The realm needs to be under control to deal with those dogs properly," on that matter Cedwyn spoke with more confidence.

"I must confess that I took some pity on the Lady and that may have colored my perceptions. Though I sensed no duplicity in her words (but I will also confess to being young and possibly ill equiped to sense such things)," he added, by way of signaling he was not gainsaying anything Roderick had mentioned and by way of apology saying, "My Lord has been most indulgent in letting me speak so freely."

Cedwyn paused and continued, "Perhaps a more pleasant topic, my Lord? I hope the work I am doing here meets with your approval."

He smiles a little, apparently satisfied. "I try not to get involved in the details of how my vassals conduct their affairs. As long as you meet your obligations, Sir Cedwyn, I care not what you do with your lands. But I will say you seem to have put the rent of Peredur to good and industrious use. That is commendable."

He adds, "I look forward to seeing things in the final form. Good morning to you, Sir Cedwyn."

Obviously dismissed, there is little to do but watch the Earl purposefully away, his squires falling in behind him.

With breakfast coming to an end Rodric stood up just as Cedrych began to rise.

"May I?" he asked as he offered to assist Habren, his eyes staying locked with hers as she rose.  Only then did he turn to her father and extended a hand.

"I look forward to seeing you again very soon Cedrych.  And to meeting your wife."  The knight then waited for the man's reply before turning a final time to Habren and taking her hand to give it a kiss.

"Lady Habren, the pleasure of your company will be greatly missed." he said with a smile.

[OOC: I'd like to address Sugar's behavior once we're back at Rodric's tent(?) but that's about it.  I'll assume wedding plans/dates were made during the breakfast discussion and we can decide on OOC.]
