Religion and Religious Traits
« on: July 27, 2015, 12:18:45 PM »
So some questions have arisen about religion and religious traits, so I wanted to make sure we're all on the same page.

Religion plays a large part in the Pendragon rules. Devout characters gain important bonuses that can make big differences in the survivability and utility of their characters.

Devotion to a religion is measured through traits. Every religion has a set of traits they favour. Characters who gain 16 or better in all of the traits of their religion gain the devout bonus.

I'll pick one that's a good example: Chaste/Lustful.

To be chaste is to be monogamous, or otherwise faithful to one?s sexual mores. It does not always require virginity, so a man being faithful to his wife is exhibiting the Chaste trait. A chaste person is modest and decorous in terms of sexual or flirtatious behaviour. (Note that a relatively chaste character can still make Flirting checks, but probably does so in a rather demure or ?innocent? manner.) A fanatically or famously chaste person is celibate and most likely virginal.

Lustful describes sexual desire, and also implies sexual activity, often without personal commitment between the persons involved. The pagan virtue of Lustful recognizes the value of this sensual art to appreciate the immanence of the Goddess. Excessive promiscuity may be called lechery, wantonness, or bawdiness.

The various Christian faiths prefer their adherents have a high Chaste trait. Virginity is the ideal that everyone should aspire to, though monogamy in marriage is permitted and encouraged. Living your life through abstinence or monogamy is not just a preference, it is a sacred duty.

On the other hand, Pagan, Odinic and similar religions tend to prefer their adherents display a more Lustful view of life. Multiple partners, casual sex, or even polygamy are not only expected but encouraged. Sex is not just for pleasure - it is considered a sacred duty.

Now, every religion has people of various temperaments among their population, who prefer certain characteristics. So you might have a Pagan who lives a chaste life, but that is not the cultural norm for that religion. In fact they might encounter social and cultural consequences for choosing to go against the mainstream religion, just as a wanton and lustful person may encounter social consequences when living in a Christian society.

So, bottom line, your characters are free to live as they choose. I just wanted you to be aware of the benefits and consequences of your religious traits.

Now, I'm not interested in turning this into an "All Sex All The Time" RPG. That's not the point of the Arthur story. But it is an element in the game to be aware of.

If anyone has any questions or discussion, feel free.
