[brave sir robin time...]

He watched as the Saxons cleaved Rodric, two solid hits that spurt blood and gore. He watched with horror as his boon companion was knocked by the blows from his horse and laid unmoving.

They all had suffered grieviously in just the first pass. A bitter thought occurred that Rodricnhad brought this in himself but that passed in self loathing and disgust both at himseld and the Praetor.

Cedwyn called, "Sir Artaigne! Form up and cover Valka with me."

They were all too wounded to fight five fresh Saxon warriors. Let them take their leader. It was enough that they withdraw.

"Retreat and withdraw," he called.

[cover Valka with Artaigne. Switch to sword.]

With a deep grunt Valka rolled over and instinctively reached for her shield and spear. A quick glance and it was clear the charge had gone terribly wrong. She could see now, far too late, that these weren't the common raiders like those on the beach. And it appeared that her group was now paying for that lack of foresight.

With another pained growl the shield maiden unsteadily rose to her feet and shouted at the nearest squire. “Horse!”

With their powerful mounts Valka knew she was too vulnerable on the ground, especially if all three Saxons decided to bury her. Rodric couldn't defend himself at all. But at least the Saxon leader was dead and Arne would live to see another day.

Valka readied her shield, unsure of whether a mount would get to her in time. She prayed that Freya would still look favorably upon them.

Thoughts of vengeance ran through his head, but he was honor bound to follow the orders of his liege and he heeded the command of Sir Cedwyn.  Drawing his sword, he moved to cover the fallen northwoman and ensure that the Saxons posed no further threat to her.

One of your squires dismounts and quickly drags Sir Rodric back towards you. Sir Cedwyn and Artaigne close ranks around Valka, and the three of you hold your ground.

Three of the Saxons trot forward, lances lowered, but they do not close to attack range, preferring to cover their fellows. Behind them, one of the Saxons leaps off his horse and runs to the side of the Thegn calling out, "Ætheling Isen!"

You three stand off against the three closest Saxons in silence for a few seconds. The one over by the fallen Thegn calls out in their tongue, and words are exchanged. You can all see the tension run through the Saxon's as they speak, and their faces turn from grim to angry.

Behind you, you hear the frantic actions of the squire tending to Sir Rodric. From his tone, the news is clearly not good.

The two by the fallen Thegn gently take him and place him over the horse in front of the one who remained mounted. The dismounted one mounts, and the two of them ride off towards the Humber River, angling east towards the sea.

The three sitting on their horses across from you look to be teetering on the edge of violence. The one in the centre, who appears to be senior, glares death rays at Cedwyn. Finally, he takes a breath and speaks in a menacing voice. It is heavily accented, and broken indicating an incomplete grasp of your language. "Follow. You die." The two Saxons on either side kick their mounts and wheel them to follow the others. The last one stares at Sir Cedwyn for a few more moments, as if remembering his face, before he too kicks his mount and turns to follow his fellows.

[Actions?]

They left the Thegn's horse wandering some distance away. They also left his lance, axe, and shield on the field where they fell.

Cedwyn returned the studied gaze of the Saxon. His eyes were a promise as well.

"Never return," he replied as the Saxon had the audacity to threaten him.

"Sir Artaigne...stand guard," Cedwyn said as the Saxons left his sight. He went to Rodric, fearing the worst. The blows he'd taken looked mortal.

Artaigne did as he was ordered, even though the promise of the fallen knight's kit was very tempting.  If there was a chance to collect it, he would do so at the first chance.

In a couple of minutes the Saxons are out of sight, heading north on the banks of the Humber river.

Sir Cedwyn removes his helmet and reaches Sir Rodric's side. The poor squire you hired is clearly out of his league and the bandages he has applied are already soaked through with blood. It is hard to tell for certain, but with all the blood and the great rent in Sir Rodric's armour near his heart, the wound looks mortal.

Rodric coughs then, spilling blood down his chin as he does so. He is pale as a linen sheet, and beads of sweat stand out on his forehead. His eyes are open.

Cedwyn called to Artaigne.

"Sir Artaigne, I would have you attend us please."

He then knelt down by his friend and brother in arms, grasping one of Rodric's hands in his.

"Rodric? Can you hear me?" He asked.

As commanded, the Irishman went to the side of Sir Cedwyn and the stricken Sir Rodric.

Rodric's gaze seemed to look far past Cedwyn, but the knight nodded slightly in response to the question.

Valka looked around at the scene almost in a daze, trying to comprehend all that had happened, and why. With the miraculous spear arm yesterday she was certain Odin had been with them on the battlefield. But now she might as well have been wielding a knife on horseback. Had the gods left already? The northwoman looked to Rodric and just felt very sad at the notion.

She stepped over and knelt to his side as well, picking up the knight’s sword and gently placing it on his chest with his free hand. Her own wounds seeped and pained with every move but she paid no mind. The man had taken more than herself and Arne combined and she wasn’t sure what to do. Anything they did for him would just delay the inevitable, Cedwyn must be seeing that as well.

“Rodric, my family has survived in this land because of your great generosity. We are forever honored and indebted to you and yours, by choice. We all consider your family to be ours, that itself is the highest honor that we can pay you.”

Valka's brows furrowed deeply, both gratefulness and great sadness readable in her expression. She reached for her idol of Freya around her neck to pray for him, but forgot she left it with Arne. This battle hadn’t ended at all like she had thought it would. If anything she very much charged in expecting to die, for Arne, for the gods. For Valhalla. Where had it gone so wrong?

Valka also gestures to the squire retrieving her horse. "Grab the thegn's horse as well as what he dropped."

The two squires get to work recovering the Thegn's gear and mount.

The sounds of battle in the valley behind you are ongoing, but the timbre has changed. The Saxons must be close to routing.
